Depression: Discussion

June 17th, 2009 by Todd Johnson

Welcome to the discussion we’re continuing from the Wednesday night Q&A.  Feel free to ask further questions or share your thoughts and experiences.

Please keep it civil & seek edification rather than confrontation.  There are many views and perspectives, even among the experts.  Our goal over the course of this month has been to open the discussion.. seek God together.. study the Scriptures, study the saints of old, learn all that we can & God-willing help a few.

I’m thankful for the participation of pastor Ed Lech, Dr. Kevin Maxwell & Todd Arvidson.  I would love for our panelists to enter the discussion here as time for them allows for it.

Ps 42:11ESV
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.

Todd – BTW – thank you for clarifying your statement, “I cannot make the subject out to be as simple as some on this thread have decided it is” (#42) in your teaching last night.

  2. Kevin Maxwell says:

Todd–when you said you frequently send people to the doctor to get checked out, I told you that most of the time I’m thinking I should be sending the depressed patient to the pastor (actually , the Lord). Last night was exactly why. 10% of the “depressed” patients I see will benefit from medication. 100% of my patients would benefit by that message. Thanks for the perspective on the Newton’s friend.
Thanks for being a fillable vessel in His hands.

    Kevin

    As Steven Green put it:

    PEOPLE NEED THE LORD

    Everyday they pass me by,
I can see it in their eyes.
    Empty people filled with care,
    Headed who knows where?

On they go through private pain,
    Living fear to fear.
    Laughter hides their silent cries,
    Only Jesus hears.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize, people need the Lord?

We are called to take His light
To a world where wrong seems right.
What could be too great a cost
For sharing Life with one who’s lost?

Through His love our hearts can feel
    All the grief they bear.
They must hear the Words of Life
    Only we can share.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize that we must give our lives,
    For peo-ple need the Lord.

    People need the Lord.

  3. Kevin Maxwell says:

Oops, written by Greg Nelson and Phil McHugh.
Steve Green is the son of missionaries. It therefore seemed natural that this song written by Greg Nelson and Phil McHugh which pictures hungry, hurting people who are unaware of the Christian message, would resonate with him. However, Green had a life-changing experience when he realized he’d been living a fake and phoney life, where he’d been doing the right things but with the wrong motives. He’d therefore understood his “desperate need for a Saviour” and “ran to Jesus for what He alone can provide.”

  4. Mr. Crabby says:

And an old song from the ’70′s…with one hand reach out to Jesus, and with the other…bring a friend. Peace out!

Verse of the Week
Now:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”
