The Dangerous Book for Boys

June 4th, 2007 by Todd Johnson

dangerous-book-for-boys.jpgI recently purchased this book on Amazon.com for me and my son. I think it’s amazing. The Dangerous Book for Boys will tell a boy how to read cloud formations, make a battery, make a periscope, and construct “the greatest paper airplane in the world.” Boys are told of the essential gear of boyhood — including Band-aids. Young adventurers will also learn of famous battles, the history of artillery, and how to understand girls.

When the Wall Street Journal reported on it, they said:

The unapologetic message is that boys need a certain amount of danger and risk in their lives, and that there are certain lessons that need to be passed down from father to son, man to man. The implication is that in contemporary society basic rules of maleness aren’t being handed off as they used to be.

Whether or not that be the case this book is as cool as it gets, and it could make this a really fun Summer for fathers and sons.

This could make for a nice Father’s Day gift too….for a specific father of two sons that I’m particularly fond of! Thanks for the tip.

June – Your boys would love it (all three of them ;) ) I would have loved something like this when I was young, and especially the father/son potential if the effort is put in.

Speaking of Father/Son relationships, I am a single mom of four wonderful children that don’t have a relationship with their father as he moved far away. The two youngest are the ages 4 1/2 and 2 1/2. Is there anyone in our congregation that would be interested in being a “Big Brother” to them and occasionally taking them to the park to play or just spend “Man to Man” time with them? I would appreciate hearing from you.

Sorry for using your blog for this Todd, but when I read about the book, I thought someone might read this too. Thanks!

Lori – don’t apologize. That’s why it’s here. I trust that God has a plan to give your sons all that they need. He knows, and He has a big family where members can make up for where others might lack.

  5. Lori says:

Thank you so much! I love CCGV because they have become my family, both spiritual and personal. We have made a lot of new friends and I have noticed even in my children the spiritual growth since attending. God has been sooooo good to us. May the family of God be blessed!

Hey Tood, I just wanted to let Lori know that we have sought to mentor the sons of single mothers. We have adopted a couple of young boys to go on the campout with us. And I know myself and others who are willing and open to come alongside those in need.

  7. Lori says:

Eric, I appreciate the quick response. God is Sooo Good! Please call anytime (530) 401-4998 so I can speak with you in person. Thanks again!

Hey Todd! This book is on my List of Books to Buy. I think it looks great. Can you tell I grew up with four brothers?

  11. Patrick says:

Todd, I actually saw and bought this book at Sams club a month or so ago for my three boys and I. We are really enjoying it. Another book along similar lines is The American Boys Handy Book by D.C. Beard.

  12. Todd says:

Thanks for the tip Patrick. I’ll check it out.

  13. Ann says:

    Hello Todd,
I’m open to my son having a mentor,it would be a blessing for him, but was also wondering if it would be ok for a mom and son, or is the book a father / son thing only? My boy is only 2 & 3/4, but I want to be able to be “both parents” as much as I can. Is that ok?

  14. Todd Johnson says:

Ann – this book is by no means a father/son thing ONLY. Your son is still too young to gain much from it, but it is something that the two of you will enjoy for many years to come.

Verse of the Week
Now:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”
